In the last few days of 401, we were assigned to use our class iPads (SFU was generous enough to loan us iPads during PDP) to demonstrate our understanding of what Literacy in the Urban Classroom is by integrating technology in the classroom. Please feel free to watch the video.

Dream Camp: March 24-28, 2014, Holly Elementary, Surrey, B.C.
SFU PDP runs a week-long Spring Break Camp, called "Dream Camp," for underprivileged inner-city students. Our Module was divided into two pods and were were tasked with facilitating and leading one Dream Camp Camp in Holly Elementary, Surrey, B.C. Our pod decided to have an over-arching theme of exploration.
One thing I learned during Dream Camp was my colleagues’ passion and dedication for teaching. I have a tendency of making things harder for myself and do all the work, simply because I did not trust anyone else to produce quality work. But seeing how my colleagues and I equally planned Dream Camp and were willing to work as hard as I do, made me realize we were, and still are, a team that tried to give the students’ a good time during Dream Camp. As a teacher in training, I am starting to see that trying to do everything is only setting myself up for disaster; I am going to make an effort to recognize my limitations and ask others for help. I've started to realize that I am not alone in my passion and dedication towards education; there are many other people out there (not just my PDP colleagues) who are just as passionate and dedicated as I am (perhaps they may be even more passionate than I am). This allows me break free from the superhero image of the teacher who tries to do everything by themselves. There will be times when things will get too big for me to handle and if I do not recognize my limitations and take more than I can handle, then my students and I will suffer. Even though we all wanted to do many things to make our Dream Camp fun, my colleagues and I trusted in each other enough to divide the work among ourselves. We collectively wanted a fun experience from the camp and we were able to respect each other as potential educators and camp facilitators. Our passion for education and teaching truly showed all week as we were able to maintain a level of fun and professionalism during the camp. |

What's My Sentence?
In the first few weeks of 401, our Module took a page from Parker Palmer's The Courage to Teach and we created a sentence that defined who we are as a teacher so far.
Bio Box
For our first assignment, we were asked to bring in two items that showed our personality. For some odd reason, I began to worry that I wouldn't find two things that summed up my personality. Then it hit me to bring these two things:
For our first assignment, we were asked to bring in two items that showed our personality. For some odd reason, I began to worry that I wouldn't find two things that summed up my personality. Then it hit me to bring my flute and my chattering teeth.
I brought the flute because I played it for about 7 years and music is a big part of my life. Music is also a way for me to relax and unwind. Its sounds a bit cheesy, but sometimes you have a day where you just need to sing Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby", Frozen's "Let It Go" or any song at the top of your lungs to and let off some steam.

I brought the chattering teeth because it seemed to sum up my somewhat complex personality. It may seem kind of unusual at first, but when you wind it up and let it go, it goes on and on and brings a bit of a smile to your face. I'm kind of like that too; a bit unusual and reserved, but once I get going, I can go on and on and occasionally bring a smile to your face.
