When most people hear the words "Graphic Novel" they immediately think of figures such as Superman, Spider-Man, or other superheroes. But graphic novels are much more than that; they are a new kind of literacy that can help engage reluctant readers by integrating the visual and the textual into one.

Batgirl, Volume 1: The Darkest Reflection, New 52 (2012)
Written by Gail Simone; Illustrated by Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes.
DC Comics
I don't really know much about the story of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, but I particularly enjoy this series because it well-written. For me, its not just a female superhero written by a man (like the current Wonder Woman series I'm reading), but this book is written by a female about a strong female, who just happens to be a superhero trying to overcome something psychological. Gail Simone writes this book in a way that places the reader into Barbara Gordon/Batgirl's frame of mind. I can't say too much about this without giving spoilers; however I recommend this graphic novel.
